I think we can all admit that Apple wasn't in a very good financial position when Winer wrote this, and his viewpoint was probably not unique, at that time.

But, like the OP said, hindsight is 20/20...

oh yeah apple was on the edge of death at that point in time. It was a very risky move on their part to do it. It paid off but there was a long string of things that could of gone either way for apple and apple would of been screwed.

It not about apple products being better than others. It was about the timing of the release of some of them. the iPod was released at just the right time. Earily or later it would of flopped. They got it out right when the market started to come into play and it grew from there.

Most of there stuff just happen to be at the right time. there was a huge ammount of luck involved with apple. They had to take big chances if they wanted to stay alive. It was make it or break it for them. When you are on the edge of colasp is when you take the greatest risk

We just need a new chip - g5, power4, what ever. We need a chip that can go head to head against the Wintel world and not rely on 2 processors to try and keep up (and even now, this isn't working)

Its very frustrating and I hope Apple will all make us happy sometime soon.

I've had a few conversations with the TV Licensing authority and they seemingly find it very hard to believe that anyone can live without TV.

Probably because from their experience, most people who do claim they don't have a TV are found to have had one after investigation so odds are... they're lying.

On the other hand, I honestly don't have one and have no problem letting anyone from TV Licensing into the flat to confirm the situation. Don't miss having one at all.

Ah, it may be a 20% increase in clock speed, but there are a number of factors that will make a difference.

First: remember that not everyone is going to be upgrading from the current top-end model to the next one (and in fact, that would be a pretty silly thing to do unless you could sell your Powerbook at near the original price). If you've got anything less than one of the current models, you're going to probably see a considerably larger boost - and not just due to clock speed, but cache, video hardware, system bus speeds and memory speeds.

Besides, we don't know exactly what the upgrade will entail. If it has more L2 or L3 cache or faster video (or even just more video memory), it may feel more than just a bit faster, especially in certain applications.

hi jef, etc - feels good to be back :D

Actually joey-j, as i recall reading, that "slow witted dork" ended up with the last laugh. Ended up flaming you so hard you ran away. Spikey was also correct with the IBM Vs moto debate (being on IBMs side, unlike the you and the other 90% of the forum).

"slow witted", possibly, thats really a matter of opinion. But the late great spikey ate chickens for breakfast, especially the ones that ran away.

Ofcourse, i am but a humble observer................. ;)

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online music store.

If you're working with detailed art/image editing, you may want the 14" iBook, as the larger pixel size may work in your favour (i.e. you know exactly where you're applying a change to the image, without having to zoom in). Likewise, if your eyesight is particularly bad, you may appreciate the screen size.

The 12" iBook is probably better in every other circumstance. The pixel density is much sharper, so pixelization isn't as noticeable. The size and weight will also make it more convenient for travelling.

Naturally, the "ideal" would be a Powerbook, but don't torture yourself. It may not be worthwhile unless you have special needs.

This keeps rearing it's ugly head and I just don't believe it.

I really cannot see Apple moving from Buy Your Own Music to Rent Your Music. What they do now works. Where's the incentive to change it? Particularly since they just renegotiated with their music partners to keep the $.99 thing going.

I cannot speak for movies/tv shows however. I don't think I'd care for the Rent model for TV shows as it's pretty rare that I'd want to spend $20 a month to watch something I might have missed. Plus, would $20 even cover the overhead for bandwidth and server maintenance, not to mention royalties for unlimited viewing?

I'll pick faster PowerBook or update powerbooks. That thing needs an update. I'd like to see all most if not all of the product lines hit 1Ghz, but I'm wishing a little too hard. I'd be psyched for a 1 Ghz G3 iBook. That would be a no brainer. Big daddy desktop and a 1 Ghz ibook. You know IBM has it because it's listed on their site.

I predict product announcement on the 18th. Nothing to base this on, just a random guess.

If they were ever to port OSX over to any version of the x86 platform, it would be 64-bit. The Itanic2 and the AMD Clawhammer will be the x86 variations of the future. The chips that they ported OSX to were most likely 32-bit, but porting it to 64-bit shoudn't be to difficult. I have to agree with everybody else that it probably won't happen. x86 is a dying architecture. Intel has pipelined the P4 to hell, the Itanic isn't even x86, and the AMD chips are more RISC than x86. This is only a last-resort option, and there's about a 99.98% chance of this actually happening, so I wouldn't worry.:)

That's all fine and well, but I just want a version that doesn't require X11 and can print.
Hmm ... can't see where you're coming from there. Prints for me and for a few other people I know.

I might give this a crack for a playabout.

Apple will close the gap and have CPU's that are only 1/2 as slow as their PC counterparts.
